Winter Storm in Idaho

The national weather service forecasts heavy, wet snow to be expected in Lemhi County above 6,500 feet (1980 m). The high temperature will drop 20 degrees (F) to 37 F, and lows will drop to 33 F. All brought by the extreme cold air behind a strong cold front featured by a tropopause polar vortex to its south. Of course the heavy snowfall can only happen in a mountain area with elevated height.

This reminds me of a snowfall event in early June (Jun 11) in Na’qu., Xinjiang. The 24-h total precipitation was 28.4 mm. The elevation of that Na’qu is 4500 m.

Also in Idaho, Boise was hit by a severe hail event, with a total of 0.34 inches of precipitation on Jun 27.

The weather map forecasts critical fire weather for the Four Corners, severe thunderstorm in Dakotas ahead of the occluded front. On the east coast, flash flooding should be watched out for in Kentucy and North Carolina ahead of a stationary front and dry line. Meanwhile extrem heat advisories have been issued for upper Midwest and in Maryland that are in the control of the high pressure system.

Meiyu front precipitation

I moved to a new apartment this weekend. Thank god (Typhoon Mekkehla, really, for sucking the moisture towards itself) that the weather is fine during the weekend. But the Meiyu stationary front will be back again to govern the lower Yangtze River and bring a week-long precipitation in Shanghai. Heavy precipitation of 250-400 mm over the next week on the board of An’hui and Zhe’jiang provinces.

Over the past week, heavy precipitation was mostly over souther China, in Yun’nan, Guang’xi, Guang’dong, souther Fujian Province, and over Taiwan. Southern Taiwan had over 880 mm rainfall in 24 hours on Jun 25. The cause was the weak southweasterly and the over-night land wind formed a lower-level convergence that excited strong convection to move over land.
